When Faith and Fear Collide

Passage: Deuteronomy 1:19-26

Speaker: Pastor Scott Stephan

Series: Lessons from the Desert

Lessons From The Desert
Deuteronomy 1:19-26; Numbers 13:26-33
  • “Without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6)”
  • “Faith is being sure of what we hope for, certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1)”
  • “Even the demons believe and tremble. (James 2:19)”
  • “Faith by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead. (James 2:17)”
  • Due diligence vs. Disobedience

Then all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead to spy out the land for us and bring back a report...” 1:21-22

Can faith and fear coexist?
“Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” vs. 21
“It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us. But...”
  • There is always a “but” or an “except”
  • ”And” is a more empowering word than “but”
“Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land...but the men said, ‘We can’t...’”
  • Fear and faith are both contagious (fear more so)
  • Unchecked fear becomes irrational
“The land devours those living in it. The people are of great size. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
